Painted and Stuck in a Corner

Some Democrats might be looking for a cave to sleep in for four years, but not me.

A few of us spent many hours in arguments with Trump supporters and saw the possibility of Hillary losing a while back. In Long Island, I found most people unhappy with their  leadership and I see a great opportunity there. While canvassing for Hillary in PA and Ohio, I heard the same —discontent, disenfranchisement and in some cases just total disgust —not even going to vote. Some said, "No matter who's president, nothing ever changes.

There are still fifty stars on the American flag and Americans from those states came out to vote in numbers like no other election before and we lost. With all the different democratic causes, our party has become too fractured, too rigid in thinking, too antagonistic with ideas other than our own, and way too nasty. Why Hillary called 63 million Trump supporters "deplorable" was typical of how nasty our party has become (we shouldn't be the nasty party). Third party presidential candidates fighting for specific democratic causes took votes away from Hillary. Others blame her loss on the dwindling votes of the unions, but who said they all voted for Hillary (many didn't). We couldn't even get the Bernie supporters to help with the Hillary campaign (and now they have to live with it).

Our party painted itself into a corner of a room and allowed a hybrid candidate to walk in and take the keys to not only the White House, but also the Supreme Court.  Trump won because he represented change, not so much for the republican party but for forgotten Americans. Immigration reform was a big elephant on the other side of the room, as it was in Britain (they voted against open borders). We need to come together and we need to listen to all Americans, not just Democrats, or we will remain in the voting minority.

As I said, our party has painted itself into a corner and it’s painful to me. It reminds me of the kid who gets his tongue stuck on the frozen flagpole.

It just means we have to work harder. It's a wake-up call.
